As the school year begins, it is important to reflect upon our practice using levelled texts. Irene Fountas, one of the authors from Fountas and Pinnell, reminds us that we may be using the levelled texts in ways that were not intended. "Rather than the use of levels in reporting to families, we have encouraged the use of terms like "reading at grade level expectation" or "reading above grade level expectation" or "not yet reading at grade level expectation" on report cards along with other clear indicators of a student's processing abilities such as understanding, word-solving abilities, accuracy and fluency."
Let’s face it, reading logs are typically not accurate in time read or books finished. From forged signatures to parents exaggerating the time their student spends in a book, reading logs do very little to motivate students or to instill a love of books. If the purpose of reading logs is to create habitual readers why do they continually fail both students and teachers? What alternatives to tracking pages or time offer more value and choice to readers?
This teacher has written a blog explaining step by step procedures on how to get students to make book spine poetry.
